Seed Talk

Seed time! Follow this little peach tree and, an orange mango seedling and some poppy flowers as they grow and mature. I’ll be posting the updates.

Next time you eat that delicious peach, think about saving that seed until you are ready to “fight” it. Reason? These things are hard to crack and you have to be careful not to damage the seed inside.

Start by going around the seed pod with some good scissors just enough to crack it or make a hole in it. Then “overwinter” it. Put it in the fridge and forget about it for a few weeks. The process is called stratification.

When you eventually remember that you’ve left some seeds in the fridge, take them out, fold a paper towel two times and wrap that seed in it. Sprinkle with some water and put in a warm semi-shady spot inside a small plastic sandwich bag. If you are lucky the seed will start sprouting and eventually get out of that small crack you’d created. Let’s go!
