Did You Buy a Coat?

For your Mango Tree?

ME NEITHER.

I had to negotiate. See, my tree thinks it is spring and displayed a fresh set of new leaves.

And so we had a conversation about the clothing, the brands the pricing.

I have never used plant covers for the “frost protection” in Los Angeles zone 10, until this winter. I had planted my young Mango tree and Avocado and Lychee in ground in Zone 9b north Santa Barbara County that is, and successfully lost them to much cooler temperatures during the night over there. All of them were grown from seed, so it was a tragedy as you can imagine…

FOR THEM.

Personally, I was surprised. Do not Ask. It was a mystery for awhile. To me.

There are gophers up there, so although those plants were in gopher baskets, I still blamed it on them and the plants themselves. They should have trained better to improve that blood circulation of theirs.

Bananas talked some sense into me this fall. Although they survived past winter in Zone 9b, again in N. SB County for reference, they decided to turn all shades of yellow and brown this year.

So I decided to investigate plant fashion, Home Depot way. This is what you need:

Here is what this dress looks like on a potted Avocado Tree.

Remember

The best Frost protection for the roots is leaves. Keep them on top of the pot or as ground cover. The more leaves you have the better. Leaves are the most ideal source of nutrition as well.

Keep it simple.
