The Ultimate Guide on growing Tomatoes.

You and I know,

You have to grow tomatoes.

Also I know, YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW TO,

BUT, You have me.

All you need to do is, go to your nearest Sprouts Store (not my choice), Ralphs (my choice, cause I am stubborn), or Wholefoods, or Smart and Final. This is 80%, job completed.

Other 20%

Step 1) Buy one, ONE (because you are going to grow the rest) ORGANIC (NON GMO, UNWAXED, some are waxed, IMPERFECT) tomato of your choice.

Step 2) Go Home and the first thing you will do is scrape all the seeds out with the spoon and eat what is left.

Step 3) Take a paper towel. Spread the seeds (soaked in flesh) on the paper towel. Fold and rub. You goal is to wipe off the flesh to the best of your abilities.

Step 4) Put the paper towel with the seeds on a small plate and leave to dry for a day or two, or till you feel like it.

Step 5) WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT. Go back to the plate, scrape off the seeds (they may be stuck to the paper towel (and it is OKAY).

SOIL

TOMATOES WILL GROW IN ANYTHING, unlike Avocados. But this does not mean you should not put any effort into it and grow yours the healthy way.

AND I KNOW HOW TO MAKE YOU SUCCEED. Remember that.

MOST PEOPLE, will grow plants in Compost, not soil, they acquired at a home improvement store. But YOU are going to perform STEP 6 and be smarter than that, which offers you a few options. Because, You are NOT THE MOST.

#1 FIND A BACKYARD. Preferably yours (or your landlord’s if you rent). If not, GO BUY some HOUSE FIRST. Shoosh!!! ANYTHING FOR TOMATOES!

No backyard? NO PROBLEM. GO to the FRONT YARD, preferably yours, your landlord may not appreciate it. IF NOT

GO TO YOUR NEIGHBOR’S BACKYARD OR THE FRONT AND DO WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT!!! You WILL be fine. I know you ARE in California!

And SPREAD YOUR SEEDS

You will be planting directly in the ground/native soil. The best option you can possibly have. The plants are energized by directly touching the ground with their “feet” , versus “walking on plastic”. They receive the energy from the earth, sort of like “Grounding”. Please Look up what “Grounding” means. It applies to all living things, including plants and rocks, yes, I said ROCKS, they have a soul too, they have a certain energy. That is what draws you to Joshua Tree. ME.

Back to the topic.

Acquire a shovel. Loosen up the soil. WATER IT. Place a seed or TWO on top, TOP WITH SAND, 1/8 inch on top of those seeds. WATER AGAIN. Let it alone for that day. Water every day after that. MINDFULLY, SLOWLY. The Idea is for the seeds to stay in their place.

#2 PLASTIC POTS. Again, Tomatoes will grow in any soil. But you are READING THIS WEBSITE, reading THIS blog, THAT is How you know, you WILL SUCCEED. SO

DRIVE TO LAGUNA HILLS NURSERY. It is located in Santa Ana, CA. And get the best and the most expensive potting soil you can get. It will be worth every gallon of gas. I promise. It is called Gary’s Best Top Pot or Acid Mix. Gary has a successful nursery business and has exceptional knowledge on soil. The potting soil without any organic matter WILL NOT ROT your plants, NO MATTER how much you water them. PLANTS LOVE WATER, just like you. Remember that.

Fill up your pot with the Acid Mix potting soil.

You will need at least a 15-20 gallon pot for this endeavor. (1-2 bags OF Gary’s Top Pot.) Disclaimer: I’m not sponsored, I should be.

Fill up the pot. WATER thoroughly. Spread the seeds. Whichever way you want. Be creative. THEY DO NOT CARE.

And, SPREAD YOUR SEEDS.

Cover loosely with Top Pot OR SAND (BTW Sand is BY FAR THE BEST Medium you can plant ANYTHING in) and water LIGHTLY, one more time. Water, every morning, after that. Repeat every morning, Until you see the sprouts, and then until those sprouts are 2 feet high.

Generally, tomatoes, do not appreciate going dry. Make sure the soil is consistently moist throughout their life.

A few words ON LIFE

Do not give up on them, when they appear dead. Appearance, it ONLY that, appearance. Just Wait, it will re-sprout somewhere around the the 6 inches from the ground. Cut off the dead portion, and you will have a NEW LIFE. I will show you. My most valuable photo so far.

See it? Figure it out.

#3 Buy bags of sand, moss, perlite/pumice rock, rice halls (not necessary), charcoal. Play with proportions. Fill up your garden bed or pot. WATER

SPREAD YOUR SEEDS. WATER every day.

LET ME EXPLAIN TO YOU.

Everything is ART

You see how the slugs created those wonderful abstract ‘cut outs’ in my leaves. ART.

While your seedlings grow, they are exposed to elements. You know, things we can’t live without.

Possums (beneficial) , squirrels, raccoons, cats, dogs, coyotes….

People….

All beneficial, in their unique ways.

The reason you see this white piece of wooden fence (photo above) that I repurposed, is because some of those beneficials love to walk all over your garden. And they do love to step on the seedlings completely killing them off, so be like CAL TRANS, Build YOUR OWN WILDLIFE CROSSING.

YES, It’s a good thing. It’s worth your 55mph. Trust me. Photo: CalTrans, Agoura Hills, Wildlife Crossing over 101, by Los Angeles Daily News.
Exactly like that.

Step 7) FERTILIZE.

#1. Chicken Manure is BY FAR the best fertilizer. I hope you have a farm. IF NOT. Go by some LAND first.

If NOT. Adopt some chickens. They make good pets/friends.

or………………………………….. OR………………..calm. Breath.

Get the AGED CHICKEN MANURE, sold in most garden supply stores.

#2. If you planted in the ground. Aged chicken manure or best natural organic fertilizers you can find. Cotton Seed Meal, Kelp, Acid Mix. DO NOT apply chemical fertilizers to your native soil, you will kill off all the beneficial bacteria found naturally in the soil. Go natural, whenever possible.

#3 The Osmocote brand makes an efficient and safe slow release fertilizer for potted plants, if you choose chemical fertilize options.

STEP 7) A WORD ON SLUGS AND SUCH. If you have a lot of “something that eats your plants, but you can not quite tell what it is”.

I will make it simple.

A good addition to this would be a special mixture to spray in mild weather (not too hot, not too cold, rainy or misty). It will help you control mildew on your plants.

Mix, in a Gallon of Water: 4 tbsp of Mineral Oil, 1tbsp of Baking Soda and a dash of dish soap.

SUN

the more Sun, the sweeter you look.

YES!, YOU DO

So do your tomatoes. Avoid Shade to ensure the sweetness and the overall health of your Tomato Plants. They need at least 6 hours of Sun exposure…

Do not place your pot near a Fig tree, like I did.

Make sure to bring the only best friend, who will always appreciate your work, no matter what.

Lily, observing my conversations with nature. She knows I am sane.
