Told me…
There is nothing like Winter Rain
If you want to Grow Dudleya succesully, you need to understand, not one plant except tomatoes (they won’t die) will do well in compost mix (miracle Grow and such). They will sell it, because you will buy it. And your plant MAY be fine for a year or two, because of the amount of fertilisers they added. It’s a million dollar industry.
ALL plants you buy in stores and nurseries will need to be “fixed”. It depends which nursery, many don’t know what they are doing.
Truth be told, California Native plants know it best.
Try growing any native California Sage plant in a regular “potting soil” compost mix, it will die within a month. If not less. The worst you can do is buy a native plant at any nursery and put it in the ground without getting rid of the original soil mix. It will rot in Clay. And chances are you have clay soil. Unless you are lucky enough to have sandy loam.
No wood chips, no compost should ever be in direct contact with the root system, only ON TOP, if you really want to compost your egg shells, your coffee grounds, etc. put it on top of the soil, cover with a layer of sand and wood chips. Trust me.
I ASKED MY DUDLEYA.
Which sits peacefully in a mixture of sand, pumice rock, SAND, small crushed rock, and Charcoal. You can add clay pellets if you’d like.

Dudleyas grow in rocky clay on the slopes. If you have rocky clay on your slope, plant dudleya there (no wood chips, no compost anywhere near) and it will do just fine.
